Our Initiatives

As a guest, it is easy to make smart environmental choices when you dine at 'Iolani School with Sodexo. We know today's student wants to do the right thing for the planet and we also understand you lead busy lives, so your Sodexo Chefs and Managers do a lot of the work for your behind the scenes!.

Local Suppliers

We purchase local produce whenever possible. We work closely with local produce distributors to maximize the fruits and vegetables purchased from local farms. Keep an eye out for our Shaka to know what's Local! Local First no backHI-localfirstmap-ae-PRINT2018

Xprss Nap

Xpressnap Dispensers save energy and waste. The napkins are made 100% recycled paper and the dispenser will encourage customers to take (and waste) fewer napkinds. Energy is saved because less power is used to recycle paper products than to create them from virgin material

Recycling

On campus we recycle the following products: carboard, glass, paper, and plastic

WasteWatch powered by LeanPath

Food waste is nutritious food that is lost or thrown away to a landfill rather than being composted or never created in the first place. This is a growing problem as we throw away about 1/3 of our food.  By reducing the amount of food waste, the negative financial and environmental impacts of food waste can be mitigated.   WasteWatch powered by LeanPath is a kitchen waste tracking system that records and tracks all of the food waste from our kitchen. This helps us to quickly identify and adjust production practices to minimize food waste.  By tracking waste we inform our staff and focus our efforts.

Compostable Packaging

We continue to look for ways to be more sustainable while delivering dynamic offerings to the students.  We have worked to eliminate sytrofoam on campus as well as all working towards 100% compostable packaging for food. Sodexo North America will eliminate single use plastic bags and stirrers by 2019, polystyrene foam items such as cups, lids and food containers by 2025, and shift straws to a “by request” item that will still be available to customers who need them while moving toward more sustainable materials.
